MakeFont
AI font generator for handwriting and images
About MakeFont
MakeFont is a browser-based AI font generator that turns a handwriting sample, a lettering image, a written style description, or a mix of these into an editable font you can download as a TTF file. Making a personal font by hand means drawing every letter, number and punctuation mark, then tracing and spacing each glyph in font software. With MakeFont a few distinct letters can guide the style, and the AI attempts the rest of the selected character set, including characters that never appeared in your sample.
What sets it apart is how openly it states its limits: the reference guides the style rather than being copied, generated letters may differ from your handwriting, and a glyph can fail and need repair before the font will build. Pricing is credit based. One AI font generation task costs 20 credits and automatic language detection costs 1. Paid plans start at $5 a month, and the $0 plan's 50 credits are granted once at registration, roughly enough for two generation tasks rather than an ongoing free allowance.
Describe the font style you want, add a handwriting or lettering image (PNG, JPG or WEBP up to 20 MB), or both, and choose a language: English, Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, or automatic detection. After you sign in and submit, the description and a compressed copy of the reference are sent for AI processing.
The AI generates character sheets for the selected language. MakeFont holds 20 credits for the task and keeps them only once its glyph-correction step succeeds; if generation fails, times out or is cancelled, the hold is released.
Your browser then traces the sheets into editable outlines and attempts a local font build. You inspect the result, repair any glyph without a usable outline, and adjust shapes. When every required character has an outline and the build succeeds, you test your own text in the live preview and download the TTF. Projects live in browser storage, so clearing site data or switching devices can remove access to local work.
- •Generation beyond the sample - The AI attempts the full selected character set, including letters absent from your reference image.
- •Text-only font creation - A written style description can be submitted without any image.
- •Editable Font Profile - Repair failed glyphs, adjust bounds and baselines, draw or erase strokes, apply transforms, and undo or redo, locally in the browser.
- •Local build, preview and TTF export - MakeFont validates a local build, previews it with your own text, and offers the TTF once all required glyphs are complete.
- •Five-language support - Create fonts for five languages, with an optional 1-credit automatic language detection.
- •Credit-based plans - Monthly plans of 200, 1,000 or 6,000 credits, yearly billing the site describes as two months free, and a $10 top-up of 200 credits that never expire. Edits, rebuilds and downloads use no credits.
MakeFont is aimed at personal font experiments. Someone who wants their handwriting as a font for journals, notes or labels can start from a photo of a few lines of writing and correct the letters that come out wrong. Illustrators and hand-letterers can attach a lettering sketch to see how the style extends to characters they have not drawn.
Plans run from one active type project (Essential) to a large library of repeat font projects (Pro). The site recommends testing the downloaded TTF in your target application, since the browser preview cannot confirm compatibility, and it does not promise an exact copy of your handwriting, so treat the output as a starting point.
