Remove the background from animated GIFs
About GIFClear
GIFClear is a small, focused web tool for removing the background from animated GIFs. Most background removers are built for still photos and either reject GIFs or flatten them to a single frame. GIFClear processes every frame of the animation and exports a transparent animated GIF, which is what you need for stickers, chat reactions, overlays, product loops and web graphics that have to sit cleanly on any background.
It offers two ways to do the job. For GIFs with a white, black, green-screen or other single-colour background, a free local remover runs entirely in your browser: nothing is uploaded and no account is needed. For complex or photographic backgrounds, an AI background remover separates a person, animal or object from the scene behind it, which requires Google sign-in and cloud processing. New verified accounts get 5 welcome AI credits, and additional credits are sold as one-time packs with no subscription. Around the remover sit several free browser utilities for working with GIFs: a resizer, a compressor, a frame extractor and a video to GIF converter. The site is upfront about limits, noting that GIF transparency is binary, so fine hair, busy scenes and colours that match the background may only be partly cleaned up.
You start on the homepage and choose between solid-colour removal and complex-background AI removal. Then you drag in a GIF or pick one from your device. Files are checked locally first: AI jobs must fit 3 MiB, 1024 by 1024 pixels, 30 seconds and 300 frames.
In local mode, a removal strength slider controls how aggressively the background colour is cut away. You raise it to clear more of the edges or lower it if parts of the subject disappear, then process again. Everything happens in the browser.
In AI mode, GIFClear shows the credit cost before you start. One credit covers one second of animation, rounded up per file, so an 8.4 second GIF uses 9 credits. Credits are reserved when you submit and only consumed once a result is saved; confirmed failures release them. A before and after preview with a checkerboard lets you watch the full loop before downloading a watermark-free transparent GIF, which stays available for 24 hours.
- •
AI background removal for GIFs - Separates a moving subject from a complex background across every frame and exports a transparent animated GIF without a watermark.
- •
Free local remover - Solid-colour backgrounds such as white, black and green screen are removed in the browser with no upload and no account, with an adjustable strength setting for cleaner edges.
- •
Full-loop preview - A side-by-side before and after view plays the whole animation over a checkerboard, so you can spot flicker or missing edges before you download.
- •
Transparent credit pricing - One credit per animation second, the cost shown before processing, credits that never expire, and automatic release of credits on confirmed failures.
- •
GIF utilities - Free in-browser tools to resize a GIF, compress it, extract individual frames and convert a short video clip to GIF.
- •
Privacy-first processing - Local tools never upload files, and the AI remover only uploads with your consent.
GIFClear suits anyone who needs a transparent animated GIF and does not want to rebuild it frame by frame in an image editor. Social media managers and community moderators can turn reaction GIFs and mascots into stickers that sit cleanly in Discord, Slack or Telegram. Streamers and video creators can make overlays and alerts from short clips.
Web designers and e-commerce sellers can cut out animated product loops or interface demos so they blend into a page background. Meme makers and hobbyists can use the free local remover for simple green-screen or white-background clips without signing up.
Because the paid credits are cheap one-time packs with no subscription, the tool fits occasional use well. Teams that need long clips, very large files or video formats other than GIF will hit the file limits and should look at a full video background remover instead.
