Remove handwriting from images, PDFs and scanned documents
About RemoveHandwriting
RemoveHandwriting is a web and mobile tool that uses AI to erase handwriting from document images and PDFs. You upload a photo or scan of a worksheet, form, contract or archive page, and it returns a clean copy with the handwritten answers, notes, pen strokes, underlines and highlights taken out, while the printed text, tables, diagrams and page layout stay in place. The problem it addresses is a familiar one: a marked-up page is often the only copy you have, and retyping or retouching it by hand to get a blank version back takes far longer than the page is worth.
The service goes beyond erasing ink. Each page is treated as a document restoration job: the tool detects the paper edges, crops away the desk or scanner border, straightens skewed pages, flattens curled or folded areas, and evens out shadows and background noise. Three AI models cover different kinds of pages (Standard for fast scan-style cleanup, Color for keeping original colors and highlights, and Ultra for dense or difficult handwriting), and a manual Expert Cleanup option exists for damaged pages that the models do not handle well. RemoveHandwriting launched in 2025 and is operated by Shenzhen Liwa Software Technology Co., Ltd., which also publishes the official iOS and Android apps. One account and one credit balance work across the website and both apps.
You start by taking a photo of the page or uploading an existing scan. The site accepts JPG, JPEG and PNG images as well as PDF files. A single image goes to the image remover, several images go to Bulk Processing, and a PDF goes to the dedicated PDF remover, where you can pick which pages to process.
Next you choose a model. Standard uses 1 credit per image and is the quickest option for everyday black-and-white documents. Color uses 3 credits and is meant for pages where paper tone, colored elements or highlights need to survive. Ultra uses 5 credits and is aimed at heavily marked or hard-to-read scans that need deeper cleanup.
The AI then analyzes the page, detects its boundary and layout, removes background clutter and shadows, corrects skew and curl, and erases the handwriting while leaving printed content alone. The vendor says processing typically takes about 5 to 10 seconds per image, depending on file size and server load.
Finally you download the cleaned image, or for PDFs export a new PDF that keeps the original page structure. Uploaded files are deleted automatically after processing and, according to the vendor, are not used to train models. Teams with larger volumes can send images to the same cleanup engine through a REST API.
- •
Handwriting and Mark Removal - Erases handwritten answers, notes, grading marks, pen strokes, underlines, highlights and scribbles from document images while keeping printed text, tables and diagrams readable. This is the core job and the reason most people use the tool, whether the page is a worksheet, a signed form or an annotated reading.
- •
Three AI Models Plus Manual Cleanup - Standard (1 credit), Color (3 credits) and Ultra (5 credits) trade speed against depth of cleanup and color preservation. For pages that still come out poorly, the Manual Processing option routes the file to expert retouching instead of another automated pass.
- •
Automatic Page Restoration - Detects document boundaries, auto-crops away desk surfaces and scanner edges, straightens tilted pages, flattens warped areas from curved book pages or folds, and removes shadows, stains and color noise, so the output looks like a flat scan rather than a phone photo.
- •
PDF Processing with Page Selection - The PDF remover lets you choose only the pages that carry handwriting, process them, and export a single cleaned PDF that preserves the layout. Companion utilities for converting images to PDF and splitting PDFs help prepare long files before cleanup.
- •
Bulk Processing and API - Multiple images can be cleaned in one batch from the browser. For integrations, a documented REST API accepts a Base64 image and returns the processed image, with request flags that control whether page distortion is corrected. An OpenAPI schema and code examples are published on the API page. API access is sold through separate API-exclusive credit plans.

Web, iOS and Android on One Account - The same account and credit balance work on the website and the official mobile apps. Subscription credits roll over while a plan stays active, and one-time credit packs never expire.
Students and parents are a large part of the audience. A completed worksheet, spelling sheet or practice exam can be scanned, cleaned and reprinted so it can be done again, which is useful for revision and repeated drills without hunting for a blank original. Teachers and tutors use the same workflow to rebuild clean master copies of handouts and test papers from a marked copy.
Office and operations staff, contract administrators and compliance teams get value from cleaning scanned forms, contracts and review packets that carry handwritten approval notes or comments, so a tidy version can be circulated or filed without rescanning. Archive and records teams can produce cleaner copies of legacy paperwork and historical documents while keeping the original scans untouched.
Developers who need handwriting removal or document correction inside their own product can call the API rather than building the image pipeline themselves.
On price, there is no permanent free plan on the website. New accounts get 3 free credits to test the service, referrals earn extra credits, and the mobile apps let you earn credits by watching ads. Paid use starts with the Basic subscription at $3.90 per month for 60 credits, the Pro subscription is $24.90 per month for 700 credits, and one-time credit packs run from $9.99 to $34.99. Anyone who only needs a handful of pages cleaned can stay on packs, while regular users will likely prefer a subscription.
