Lit Review Outline
Evidence-checked literature review outlines from your own PDFs
About Lit Review Outline
Lit Review Outline is an AI literature review tool for students and researchers writing a thesis or dissertation chapter, or a narrative review for a journal. It deliberately does not write the review for you. Instead it works from the papers you have already read: you upload your PDFs, and it pulls verbatim evidence with page numbers, maps the themes your library covers, and builds a chapter outline you can check line by line before you start writing. Many AI writing tools generate review text that may invent citations, which is a serious problem in academic work. Lit Review Outline is built around the opposite idea, that every point in the outline should trace back to a quote on a specific page of a real paper.
The site also offers free tools that need no account: a topic generator that returns an outline with themes and real, citable papers with DOIs you can open, a Review of Related Literature generator with foreign and local Philippine studies, an APA 7 outline template for Word and a source and synthesis matrix template for Excel. The full PDF workflow is a one-time payment of $29 per project with no subscription. The product is in beta, and the site states that anything that fails on its side is re-run free or refunded in full, with $20 back within 7 days for other dissatisfaction.
You start by uploading the PDFs you have read, optionally with a .bib or .ris file of your references. The PDFs need a text layer, and scanned copies are flagged by a free in-browser check before you pay. Your PDF files stay in your browser and only the extracted text is sent for processing.
Next the tool maps your library. It shows which topics your papers cover, gives coverage signals, and suggests one round of additional papers within the search scope you set, each with the reason it was suggested. The search terms are shown so you can report them in your methods.
You then pick and order the themes that will become your sections, and confirm the chapter structure. The outline is generated with an introduction, a literature search strategy, candidate theoretical frameworks found in your PDFs, thematic sections with key points, agreements and tensions, and gaps to verify. You check each point against its source page and export the result to Word and Excel.
- •Verbatim evidence with page numbers - Quotes are matched back to the text of your PDFs, and anything that could not be matched exactly is labeled for you to check.
- •Theme map of your library - See which topics your papers cover and which papers you may have missed, with up to 30 targeted supplements added in one round.
- •Structured chapter outline - The outline covers the introduction, search strategy, theoretical framework candidates, thematic sections, agreements and tensions, and research gaps, with two regenerations included.
- •Word and Excel export - You get a Word outline with APA 7 references and an Excel literature review matrix, and any AI-suggested wording is labeled for reference only.
- •Privacy-minded processing - PDFs stay in your browser and only extracted text is sent, which matters for unpublished or licensed papers.
- •Free starter tools - A topic-to-outline generator with real citable sources, an RRL generator, and Word and Excel templates are available without an account.
Lit Review Outline is built for graduate students writing a thesis or dissertation literature review chapter, including Chapter 2 in many programs, and for researchers preparing a journal narrative review. EdD and nursing students, and students in the Philippines who need a Review of Related Literature, are directly addressed by its free tools and guides. It suits people who have already gathered and read their sources and now need to organize them into a defensible structure without risking invented citations. The site notes it is not a ghostwriter, so it fits students and supervisors who want the writing to remain the student's own.
