Check whether an image is AI-generated or a deepfake
About Is This Real AI
Is This Real AI is an image checker that estimates whether a picture was made by an AI image generator or had a face swapped or altered with AI. You upload a JPEG, PNG or WebP image up to 8MB and get back two numbers, an AI Probability and a Deepfake Probability, along with a plain-language verdict. When one generator stands out, the result names the closest match from a list of about 100 generators, including Midjourney, Flux, Stable Diffusion, DALL-E, GPT Image, Nano Banana Pro, Ideogram and Adobe Firefly.
What sets it apart is how openly it explains its limits. Every check ends in one of four verdicts: Likely AI-generated, Likely Deepfake, Not likely, or Uncertain. The thresholds are set to avoid the costliest mistake, calling a real photo AI-generated, so mixed or weak evidence produces Uncertain rather than a guess. The site states that screenshots, compression and filters reduce accuracy, and that in its own tests it missed face swaps made with the open-source InsightFace tool. It does not depend on watermarks, C2PA content credentials or EXIF metadata, which are easy to strip, and instead looks at the pixels themselves.
Choose an image from your device; the file does not leave your browser until the check starts, and the original file works better than a screenshot or re-saved copy. A detection model trained to tell real photos from AI-generated images then examines the pixels, looking for the statistical traces generators leave in texture, noise, edges and lighting. Separately, it looks at any faces for signs they were swapped or altered. A check usually takes a few seconds and uses one credit, which is returned if the check fails on the service's side. You then read the verdict, the two probabilities and, where relevant, the most similar generator. The site says it uses your image only for the check and does not keep it, while noting its image-analysis provider may retain it for up to 14 days.
- •Two probabilities per check - Separate AI Probability and Deepfake Probability scores show whether the whole image or just a face looks synthetic.
- •Four clear verdicts - Likely AI-generated, Likely Deepfake, Not likely and Uncertain, with published thresholds for each.
- •Generator matching - Names the closest of about 100 known image and video generators when one stands out, while noting this is a similarity, not proof.
- •Pixel-based detection - Works without relying on watermarks, C2PA credentials or EXIF metadata, so stripped images can still be flagged.
- •Honest uncertainty - Thresholds favour Uncertain over a confident wrong answer, and known blind spots such as InsightFace swaps are documented.
- •Pay-once credits - Packs of 20, 100 or 300 checks with no subscription; credits never expire.
Is This Real AI is useful for journalists and fact-checkers who need a quick read on a viral image before publishing. Moderators and trust and safety teams can use it as one signal when reviewing reported content. Marketplace and dating-app users can check a suspicious profile photo or listing image. Teachers, researchers and curious readers can test images they see online and learn which generator styles a picture resembles. Because it is sold in small one-time packs, it suits occasional checking as well as heavier use without a monthly commitment.
