Any piece, at your student's level. Just ask.
About PlayableNotes
PlayableNotes is an AI tool for piano teachers that turns a photo of sheet music into a version a particular student can actually play. You snap a picture of the page, take a screenshot or upload a PDF, and an AI model finds each line of music and reads it note by note into an editable, engraved score in your browser. Then you say what your student needs in plain words, such as "make this easy for a second-year student", "easier left hand", "no octaves" or "put it in C", and PlayableNotes writes that version in about a minute. You can hear it on a real piano sound, fix anything that came out wrong and print a clean PDF for the lesson.
The problem it solves is familiar to any teacher whose student falls in love with a piece that is beyond them. Hand-arranging a simplified edition takes time, and buying a published easy version rarely matches the exact skill a student is working on. PlayableNotes keeps the tune recognizable and rewrites only the hard parts: in its examples the right hand of a Chopin nocturne stays as written while the wide left-hand chords become something a student can hold, every octave in the Maple Leaf Rag becomes a single note, and the Moonlight Sonata moves from four sharps to A minor for a beginning reader. It is honest about its limits, saying plainly that reading is not perfect and that any wrong note can be clicked and fixed. PlayableNotes is operated by Ozni Apps LLC in Colorado Springs, uses OpenAI and Cloudflare as the AI providers that read music and make changes, and engraves scores with Verovio. Reading your own music costs credits, 1 credit per line, with 50 free credits on a new account; everything else, including up to 100 AI changes a day and a library of public-domain pieces, is free.
First you snap it. Upload photos of the pages (one page per photo), screenshots, PDFs or MusicXML. You check the pages, in order, and see how many credits the reading will cost before it starts. You are never charged more than that number, you are charged less if fewer lines are found, and a reading that fails costs nothing. In a minute or two the music is read into a real score.
Next you ask for their version. Type what you would tell a colleague about the student, and PlayableNotes produces the arrangement. Each change is saved as its own version, so the original is always one click away and you can make several teaching versions of the same piece.
Then you hear it, fix it and print it. Playback uses a real piano sound with the notes lighting up as they sound. Click any note to open its measure in the editor, where you can drag notes, change lengths, or add and remove notes, or ask the AI for a further change. When it is right, print a PDF, download MIDI or MusicXML, or send your student a practice link that opens, plays and prints that version without an account.
- •
AI Sheet Music Reading - An AI model finds each line of piano music (treble and bass staff together) in a photo, screenshot or PDF and reads it note by note into an editable score. Credits are counted per line before reading, and failed readings are free.
- •
Plain-Language Arrangement - Ask for a simpler version, an easier left hand, no octaves, music for small hands, a shorter edition or a different key, and PlayableNotes rewrites the score while keeping the melody recognizable. AI changes are free, up to 100 a day per account.
- •
Score Editor With Version History - Every score is stored in a compact text notation for piano music and opens as an engraved score. A measure editor lets you correct any note by hand, and every change, by hand or by AI, is kept as a version so nothing is lost.
- •
Playback, Print and Export - Hear any version on the Salamander Grand Piano sound with notes highlighted as they play, then print a clean PDF or download PDF, MIDI or MusicXML for use in other notation software.
- •
Practice Links and a Free Library - Share a practice link so a student can open, play and print one version without signing up, and revoke it at any time. A library of public-domain classic pieces is free to use and arrange, with the source of each piece credited.
- •
PlayableNotes in ChatGPT - Connect PlayableNotes to ChatGPT, attach sheet music or ask for a library piece by name, request the version you need and get a practice link, using the same account and credits as the website. The site also shows AI-assisted original teaching studies, such as a short rhythm study composed from a brief.
PlayableNotes is made for piano teachers. Private teachers with students at many levels can take the piece a student wants to play and produce a version matched to that student this week, whether that means a beginner melody with a simple bass, closer left-hand positions or no octaves for small hands. Teachers who build lessons around a single skill can generate hands-separate practice versions or a focused rhythm study, and share practice links so students can hear and print their part at home.
It also fits church and accompanying pianists who need a hymn or piece moved to another key, and teachers who want to turn an old PDF or printed page into an editable score they can export to MuseScore or MIDI. Because reading costs credits only when you read new music, and the library, playback, editing, AI changes and exports are free, teachers can try it on real lesson material with the 50 free credits before buying a pack. The terms ask that you upload only music you own or have permission to adapt for your own teaching, so it is a tool for preparing lesson material rather than for distributing arrangements. Credit packs are currently sold to US billing addresses only.
